The International Youth Day is commemorated every year across the world. It is an opportunity again to bring issues of young people to the frontline. It’s 24 hours of having young people take the centre space. Onelife Initiative for Human Development will be joining other youth-led and for-youth organisations to commemorate this year’s celebration. Themed – Safe Spaces for Youth, we will be having an open door event for the first time. We are excited about this and young people who are a very heterogenous mix will also be attending this event on Saturday evening.
NURHI’s Youth Programmes Officer, Mrs. Fanimokun Adesolawill be talking about the safe space available for young people in the life planning space. What are today’s realities? If you have questions about contraceptives, decision making etc in today’s social space, you won’t get a better place to ask this question than at this event.
The Independent National Electoral Commission will also be around. We are in last minute discussions to ensure we have the Resident Electoral Commission, Mr. Mutiu Agboke, Esq shares with us what his experience as a young person was. The hard decision he had to make, the opportunities he has lost and won. It promises to be eye-opening. Also of note is that he will be unveiling our Safe Space wall. We drew inspiration from Lead FM Ibadan and CODE, Abuja for this. The governance and policies section of the wall is eye-popping. The entire component, paintings and drawings were done by young people. Completely. We hope the images go viral, stir conversations and the space becomes appealing for every young person wants to take selfies and of wefies! Fun, snacks and enough to drink is also going to be part of the celebration.
The pictures here are from our commemoration of the date in 2016. Enjoy. Meanwhile, happy International Youth Day to every young person out there. It is another year and moment to make strong impact.
