Happy International Women's Day

Every year, we commemorate the International Day o Every year, we commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This year's was at Onireke High School, Ibadan and People's Girls Grammar School, Ibadan.

We were honored to be joined by a tech guru from Interconnect Partner Limited, who shared her inspiring story from a curious young girl to becoming a thriving woman in tech. Her story encouraged the students and reminds them that their dreams are valid most importantly they are and achievable. She awarded scholarships to two outstanding girls to attend the highly anticipated Tech Exhibition... an event every young scientist in Ibadan looks forward to.

Our other facilitator, Adeola Adeagbo a Data Analyst and a lecturer told the story of how she - a student with poor math grade to a first Class graduate of Agricultural Economics by just doing a mind shift. She provided mentorship opportunities to 4 students interested in Data analysis... amazing right?

The students were excited to answer questions as they applauded and cheered while other girls also received special gifts from our team. Moments like these remind us why representation matters.

“See my sister! Leave wetin them write on top bus, “See my sister! Leave wetin them write on top bus, enter the bus.”😢

That was what a woman said to us during one of our market campaigns to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

What she meant was simple and painful: we can say all we want, it will not change her decision. Despite years of advocacy, awareness campaigns, and conversations, some people remain unmoved. For them, FGM is still seen as normal, acceptable, and necessary.

We are under no illusion that FGM will be completely eradicated within a few years of advocacy. Deeply rooted cultural practices do not disappear overnight. But what we do hope for is progress consistent, collective effort from individuals, communities, institutions, traditional leaders, and policymakers to ensure that this harmful practice becomes a thing of the past.

As we commemorate the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, we call for a renewed commitment from all stakeholders. Ending FGM requires more than messages on buses it requires courage, persistence, and the willingness to challenge harmful norms, even when it is uncomfortable.

FGM should not be defended as culture.
It should be remembered as history. @aendfgmcnetwork

“I’m glad you’re hearing this from other people an “I’m glad you’re hearing this from other people and that no information was withheld.”

That was the closing remark from Dr. M.S Achibong-Okonneh, who has written extensively on the reproductive health of young people, as we concluded our session. 💯💯

Those words mattered because they confirmed how important, honest, complete, and non-judgmental conversations are or should be with young people especially on topics often full of myths and half-truths. Our job is simply to debunk these myths and provide accurate information.

One moment that stood out was realising that different communities of young people have different SRHR needs. It reminded us that no matter the community of young people or their location, young people are not asking for too much, they are simply asking to be told the truth.

As the session came to a close, the room felt different. Not louder, not quieter just more aware. More informed. More confident. We are grateful to @kdu_ibadan @koladaisiuniversitysrc for creating space for these conversations and also the students for opening up about their needs because silence has never helped anyone.

Remember we are just a DM away… ours will always be a safe space to have that sexual and reproductive health conversations. 😊

The photo stories, the gifts, the jokes, the excit The photo stories, the gifts, the jokes, the excitement and most importantly, the honest conversations on sexual and reproductive health and rights. We had an impactful time with freshers at the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Apata, Ibadan, Nigeria.

We had open discussions on menstrual health and hygiene, abstinence, sexual and gender-based violence, and the management of unplanned pregnancy. Through real life photo stories, students were able to see, relate, and reflect on experiences that mirror their own realities. One moment stood out. A male student shared that he wished someone he knew, who had gone through a difficult experience with an unplanned pregnancy, had access to the kind of information being shared. With the right information at the right time, better decisions could have been made.

Moments like this remind us why we keep showing up so more young people can access accurate, timely, and non-judgmental information that empowers them to make informed choices.

View the pictures in the last slides to see some of the questions we get during sessions like these. #Questions here are are collage from a number of tertiary institutions in #Nigeria.
