Condoms: A Small Shield with Big Protection

Did you know?

Did you know that condoms have been around since 1564? That’s right! For centuries, people have relied on condoms as a method of contraception and protection against infections. Over time, these small but mighty barriers have evolved into one of the most effective ways to enjoy safer sex without worries.

A Quick History Lesson

The first documented use of condoms dates back to the mid-1500s. While they weren’t as advanced as the ones we have today, they were still designed to serve the same purpose—protection. Fast forward to 1994, the modern female condom was introduced by Dr. Lasse Hessel, a Danish MD, and received FDA approval, giving women more control over their sexual health.

Why Are Condoms So Important?

Condoms are so essential that they are on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) list of essential medicines—right next to life-saving drugs. This list only includes the most effective, safe, and necessary medical supplies, and condoms made the cut! Why? Because they don’t just prevent pregnancies—they also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/AIDS.

Every year, about 9 billion condoms are sold globally, with the highest sales recorded in East and Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe. Clearly, many people understand their importance. But are Nigerians using them consistently?

Are Nigerians Using Condoms?

A 2020 survey by NOIPolls on condom accessibility revealed some interesting facts:

92% of Nigerians know what a condom is and what it’s used for.

34% of Nigerians admit to using condoms.

But only 28% use them consistently.

This means that while awareness is high, consistent use is still a challenge. The question is…why? Myths? Stigma? Lack of access? Let’s clear up some common misconceptions.

Myth vs. Fact: Can I Wear Two Condoms for Extra Protection? ❌❌

Some people believe that wearing two condoms at once will double the protection. This is FALSE! Instead, it increases friction, making them more likely to tear. One condom is enough—just use it correctly!

Male vs. Female Condoms: What’s the Difference?

Both male and female condoms serve the same purpose, but they work differently:

🔹 Male Condom: A thin sheath worn over the penis to prevent sperm from entering the woman’s body.

🔹 Female Condom: A thin, flexible plastic pouch inserted into the vagina before sex to prevent sperm from reaching the uterus.

Both options are effective, so you can choose the one that suits you best!

Condoms and Latex Allergies: Are There Alternatives?

Most condoms are made from latex, but if you have an allergy, don’t worry! Polyurethane condoms exist as an alternative and provide the same level of protection.

Why Should You Use a Condom? 🤔

Using condoms correctly and consistently offers many benefits:

No hormonal side effects – Unlike pills or injections, condoms don’t affect your hormones.

Easily accessible – Available at pharmacies, supermarkets, and even some clinics for free.

Affordable – Protect yourself without breaking the bank.

Prevents STIs & unplanned pregnancies – Protection against HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and more.

Can make sex last longer – Some condoms are designed to help with endurance.

Check Your Condom Before Use!

Did you know that condoms can expire? Always check the expiry date before using one. An expired condom is weaker and more likely to break.

Take Control of Your Sexual Health

As we celebrate International Condom Day, remember that taking charge of your sexual health is your responsibility. Unplanned pregnancies and STIs, including HIV/AIDS, can be prevented with correct and consistent condom use.
