A picture is worth a thousand words, and our photo exhibition, Visualising Girl Child Education, said it all!Through 16 captivating photographs, we told stories of the challenges of girls while striving to get an education in Oyo State. Each image brought to life issues such as inadequate school infrastructure, economic barriers, hope of young girls and the need to surmount challenges everyday.We engaged with the photo enthusiasts to get their views on the images while also helping them understand the stories behind the images, we heard some interesting dimensions from the students as well as the teachers – their views differed. Thank you to everyone who came and engaged with these stories through the lens and to all those who made meaningful contributions and corrections to the pictures. The launch of the State of Girl Child Education (SoGE) in Oyo State report was a significant moment for all of us at Onelife Initiative.This research, supported by Malala Fund, highlighted the realities of girls’ education across 34 sample schools in Oyo State. Key findings include:📌Only 11 girls in Iseyin LGA passed WASSCE with required credits.📌Families spend up to ₦89,200 per term on educational essentials for a girl child in a free school📌Critical LGAs needing immediate intervention in Education.This report is more than data—it’s a call to action. Town hall meetings are not only for political even

Town hall meetings are not only for political events. We recently brought together a very diverse group of stakeholders to discuss issues surrounding girls education in 5 Local Government Areas in Oyo State.

With support from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Local Inspectorate of Education, we assembled community leaders, girls, teachers, school administrators, religious leaders, media professionals and girls in public secondary schools to address the quality of girls education in Iseyin, Kajola, Oyo East, Oyo West and Afijio.

Our choice of Local Governments followed the WAEC result of 2022 where only 1,267 girls from public school sat from the exams in Iseyin Local Government and only 11 passed representing over 99% fail rate. Our Local Governments of choice were the poorly performing ones in the state.

With support from the stakeholders in the community and our partner @MalalaFund, we are poised to reverse this trend. Watch this space even as we are welcome to ideas to address this issue of poor performance and drop-out rate of girls in Secondary Schools using multi approaches.

Select media professionals across broadcast, print

Select media professionals across broadcast, print, and online platforms in Oyo State recently gathered for a workshop on Gender-Responsive Education Sector Planning (GRESP).

Our involvement was through the Education Champion Network, Nigeria, with support from the Malala Fund. The sessions equipped journalists with tools to highlight gender gaps and wins in the education sector through strategic reportage and storytelling.
Following the training, expect to see more from the media in Oyo State tell stories from a gender lens helping stakeholders make decisions regarding the education sector in Oyo State.

Following that training was also a capacity building for civil society organisations who work in the education sector to help better understand ways in which gender disparities can be reduced.

These two groups came up with a work plan which will support in bridging these gaps and they will be carrying them out in various capacities as Media and CSOs. Private groups and individuals were also encouraged to support in various ways by partnering with bodies like the alumni associations to support the effort of government.

One Child, One Teacher, One Book and One Pen, acco

One Child, One Teacher, One Book and One Pen, according to Malala Yousafzai can change the world.

Every time we get the opportunity to engage with stakeholders, we are quick to let them also know that a child in a bad school is better than a child in no school at all!

In Akwa Ibom State, we met with stakeholders in #Uyo, #Abak and #Oron Local Government Areas with intent to collectively address and review upwards the number of girls who make it to the Senior Secondary Class 3 and eventually write the terminal WASCCE examination.

We also explained our interest in girls having better performance in this examination. In 2022, a total of 3,835 students sat for the external examination in Uyo Local Government, with only 656 girls and 483 boys having credits in 5 subjects, including Mathematics and English.

The concerns in the various halls the meeting held showed how parents, teachers and various stakeholders were crestfallen about the state of things and were ready to address the challenge. Together, and with support of critical actors in the state, we are hoping this trend can be reversed. Will you join us?

Horticulture is one of the most profitable busines

Horticulture is one of the most profitable businesses globally. It accounts for over 21% of the World Agricultural Exports. The secret however is in having the technical production and management knowledge.

We addressed this problem recently with farmers in one of our hubs in Ejioku with our partner, Horti Nigeria providing all the resources. We showed youths and women the sustainable way of producing sweet corn and cabbage adopting various innovations and profitable approaches. At Agriwas Farm, Aboke Village, the lead farmer there shared professional insights on starting small in sweet corn production, nursery approaches and Integrated Pest Management options to pursue.

We are growing our various hubs, one farmer at a time, holding their hands to adopt innovations with our priorities being youths and women on the Horti Nigeria project.

123 students and 3 teachers were imparted by our School Connect session at Egbeoba High School, Ikole, Ekiti State. Providing life skills for in-school adolescents in a major part of our Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights intervention.

Some of the questions asked by the students include — How can we protect ourselves from boys? What age is the right time to have sex? What age does menstruation start? Over the years, our anonymous question box has always allowed adolescents to know and see that the spaces for our sessions are safe and the environment is non-judgemental.

Do you also want answers to these questions and others? Slide into our DM! Before you ask; yes, we also gifted sanitary pads to boys who participated actively. It’s part of our intentional comprehensive literacy approach to ensure boys can also support their friends, sisters, and other female relatives during their menstrual period. We are grateful to the leadership of the school for having us.

With the support of our partner @MalalaFund and these communities, we’re aiming for a tangible increase in enrolment, retention, and completion rates that will empower the girls in our communities.

Today, we commemorated and celebrated the Internat

Today, we commemorated and celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child with 184 girls in both #Ibadan and #Uyo, inspiring young girls to dream big and take charge of their future!

In Ibadan, our team visited United Secondary School, #Agugu, where we engaged students in a conversation on goal setting, decision making, self-esteem, and abstinence.

In Uyo, our team commemorated the day at Diplomat Academy, teaching life skills that will help these girls thrive in #school and after school as well. The vice principal in Ibadan excited to take home a point told us, “I will also educate my female grandchildren on how to set SMART goals.”

If you have girls around you, ask them — What are their SMART goals for the near future? If they don’t have one, have them pick up a pen and draw a list.

Last week, we met with the amazing ladies of the Female Youth Association (Purple Girls) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to commemorate World Contraception Day 2024! It was an incredible opportunity to have real conversations about contraception and family planning, as many of them had the opportunity to learn about other methods of contraception asides condom.

Led by a our Uyo team, we had family planning officer from PHC Ikot Ebido , the discussion highlighted the importance of contraception and all the options one they can choose from.

Of course, we didn’t forget our trusty anonymous question box! It’s always great to see people feel comfortable asking questions they might not usually voice.

Let’s keep driving more conversations about contraception for both men and women.

Africans between the ages of 15 and 35, our target

Africans between the ages of 15 and 35, our target demography at Onelife Initiative in Nigeria, constitute 5.5% of the world’s population. That’s about 450 million youths. Massive number there… Transforming their lives and communities has to be a global priority else the result of ignoring this is better imagined. Joining the Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education at the King’s College London on the Transformative Education for Young Africans and for Africa presented us an opportunity to share our ideas at the plenary on our insights into employment needs for young people in Nigeria.

Having one of our volunteers join the meeting physically was also a win for us. It was our volunteer’s first time on a train ride and a first time on the campus of the University of Lagos. More impressive was the quality of her participation at the event.

After an intensive 5-day residential training on Increasing Sexual and Reproductive Autonomy among women and girls in Oyo State, our Peer Educators couldn’t wait to get to work! They immediately began sharing their new knowledge with peers in their communities.

They held engaging discussions on Gender Power Dynamics, Gender Inequality, and its impact on Sexual and Reproductive Health. They also shared life skills such as Body Image, Self-Esteem, Decision Making, Goal Setting, and Communication, Negotiation, and Refusal Skills to help their peers make informed decisions about their health.

One of the most exciting parts? Many of the girls were thrilled to learn how to track their menstrual cycles and explore various contraceptive methods. They’re now equipped to identify and report Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) to the right authorities.

Here’s the best part—the impact is spreading fast! The peers are already mobilizing their friends for the next cohort session because they believe this life-changing information shouldn’t be kept to themselves.

There are so many opportunities in the agricultura

There are so many opportunities in the agricultural sector, that there is room for everyone to do something. We have seed producers, input dealers, consultants, cash crop farmers, vegetable farmers, food crop farmers, livestock farmers, agronomists, etc. One opportunity that is very easy to venture into, and has not really been utilised is the seedlings production.

Seedling production is the cultivation of plant seeds in a special place known as a nursery. This is done so that for the first few weeks, the plants are grown and nurtured in a conducive environment through controlled medium until they reach a specified and suitable size for transplanting.

Though not all vegetables require nursery, some major plants, such as tomatoes, pepper, cabbage, onions, lettuce, etc really require nursery.
In respect to this, we have been training vegetable farmers on the #HortiNigeria on the various methods of innovatively raising healthy seedling in nurseries.

Women and girls in #Nwaniba and #Ikpa in Akwa Ibom

Women and girls in #Nwaniba and #Ikpa in Akwa Ibom benefited from our intense community sensitisation on SRHR. Obviously, the reproductive culture and lifestyle of women and girls differ even within the communities . Of note for us was the evidence that little or no information about sexual and reproductive health and rights exists in the community.

With support from out partner, Ipas Nigeria Health Foundation, we were able to address this gap. We took this a step further to also link them up to services and also point them to government resourced services at the Primary Health Care Centre and the Committee on GBV in the state in addition to community service providers who were trained.

We are happy seeing women and girls we have linked to services providing glowing response.
