Weโ€™re proud to showcase some activities from the Weโ€™re proud to showcase some activities from the You Matter in this Matter project being implemented with our partners. Weโ€™ve seen some amazing things happen through support from Voice to embark on this project. The project is a response to the #EndSARS events of several months back.

Our major focus was to help youths and women understand how to engage properly with government security agencies, particularly the Police. It was intentional that we support young people we engaged with, to better understand how best to handle issues of police brutality and other related security challenges in their communities.

While we wait for a change, we hope to see a future where no one has to protest on the streets before they are treated with the dignity every human deserves.

We're still trying to figure out how to pronounce We're still trying to figure out how to pronounce Enyeneokpon's name, but we know you won't be able to either.

From our Uyo office, She came in on zoom and gave us a great presentation on the advantages of volunteering and interning. She explained that it's not about doing something altruistic or donating timeโ€”it's about helping others while developing your skills and improving yourself.

We also learned how not to assemble a power point presentation.

Here's what we learned: if you think it looks like your presentation isn't going well, it probably isn'tโ€”and that means you need to take the time to improve things. If there are too many slides and they're too long or complex-looking, try breaking them up into smaller sections and putting them on cards instead of on slides. And if you have a lot of text in your slides, put it in bullet pointsโ€”it'll make it easier for your audience to understand what you're saying. the more you do it the better you get at it.

We had a photography consultant from @malalafund c We had a photography consultant from @malalafund come to document the work we do with the girl child in their schools in #Oyo State. We understand the importance of storytelling. We are also learning how to tell our own stories better especially those around behaviour changes. We are eager to see how our story of change will be interpreted. You get to hear it directly from those who experienced it first-hand.

The photographs captured the joy and beauty that comes with helping girls realise their full potential and fulfil their dreams.

We are learning to tell our stories better. What We are learning to tell our stories better. What is the nature of our work at Onelife Initiative? What are the various ways we support young people?

Since our team members are a major part of our work, who are they and what do they do? We are trying to answer these questions through support from our media team. Everyone at this end is longing to see the end product. Are you?

Weโ€™re not sure if we should be excited or super Weโ€™re not sure if we should be excited or super excited: ๐Ÿ˜ป...but the question is are we too young to own houses? The answer is NO!

We have a vision of the future that includes every staff at Onelife Initiative owning their own homes. But how do we get there?

The @federalmortgagebank honoured our invitation to walk us through the process of accessing mortgage as an organisation for staff to purchase their own homes. We think this is a great idea, as it will help us create an environment where everyone feels like they are part of something bigger than themselves. In addition to the pensions and health insurance that we provide for staff, we hope that in the near future we will be able to support everyone in our organisation to own their own homes through the National Housing Fund of the Federal Government. Mixed feelings as we commence the 2.5% monthly deductionsโ€ฆ.

In any case, itโ€™s exciting stuff! ๐Ÿคญ #Oleyo has become a buzzword at the office after the session. Ask any of our staff or volunteer.

Today at our Monday meeting/employee training was Today at our Monday meeting/employee training was all about funding and funding opportunities for non-profit organizations, and how we can explore fundraising through other means rather than depend solely on international and national fundings.

We explored the different types of funding that are available, and what the process is like to apply for them, the process is frustrating but its worth it because you learn from every step and with each mistake as you go.

It was also a time to look at last week's activities and explore better ways of achieving them!

Here are some helpful tips;
๐ŸฉธChoose your method of sanitation e.g pads, tampons, menstrual cups.
๐Ÿฉธ Change your sanitary pad regularly every 4 - 6 hours.
๐ŸฉธWash yourself regularly
๐Ÿฉธ Don't use soaps or vaginal hygiene products.
๐ŸฉธDiscard your used sanitary products properly, do not flush.
๐ŸฉธBe ready with extra sanitary pads during or some days to your periods.

Wow! Imagine how many pieces of pads a girl will use in her period life time... business people how far?

What's the best way to dispose of pads in an Eco Friendly way? Some people bury their pads, some wash and discard, some dispose in pit latrines, suggest burning which is actually environmentally safe.
How do you dispose your sanitary pads? Share with us in the comment section.

Do you ever get the feeling that your social skill Do you ever get the feeling that your social skills are a bit rusty?
Networking is an important part of the job market, and you may even have a few tricks of your own up your sleeve. But what do you do when at a meeting or conference and you have to network?

Precious took us through a list of things we can do to help us network better especially when we meet people for the first time. Employee trainings during our Mondays meetings are now a regular part of our learnings so apart from project overviews, we are learning new skills every week and improving ourselves in terms of work ethics and skills.

Here are some tips for starting conversations with difficult people:

๐Ÿค“ Be prepared: Read up on them beforehand if possible!

๐Ÿฅณ Be friendly: Smile, use body language to show interest, etc.

๐Ÿ˜Š Be approachable: Try to be in a good mood and be open-minded about their ideas/opinions.

Share some of your tips with us in the comment section and lets learn from you. #MondayMeetings #MondayMotivation #conversationstarters
Happy World Youth Skills Day! Transforming Youth S Happy World Youth Skills Day! Transforming Youth Skills for the Future

Weโ€™re celebrating Nigerian youths who have had to go out of their way to get skills. Especially those soft skills that you do not find in the classroom. Those skills around public speaking. Those tech skills that are now required in the work place today and yet are not taught in schools. Skills that help you manage people. Skills around social interaction. Skills around organising events and activities.

If you are a young person, you will need a lot of skills. And getting those skills will have to be deliberate. You will need to volunteer anywhere you find yourself. Put yourself out there. It will make you vulnerable but you will learn. Offer to do things for free. Itโ€™s actually not free at the end of the day. You will be learning at their expense. Always ask questions about the skills for the future you desire. Then start skilling up towards it. When next you see that job advert. Take a look at the skills they are requiring. Then set a goal for yourself. When that future comes, you will be ready. What special skills do you currently have? Share with us in the comment section.

Once upon a time, these guys went to a barberโ€™s shop.
A phone got stolen.
The owner went and got a police officer and arrested 9 young people in the shop.

While at the police station, the phone was found.
BUT! the police refused to release the young men rather demanded for monies to be paid for their bail.
Money exchanged hands yet they were beaten and not released.

One of the young men got frustrated and decided to seek help.
He called our toll free line and we came to the station to ask what happened.
Plenty English was spoken and Money was returned.
Boys were released.
Apologies were exchanged.

That is the end of our story! That is the end of their story. They were happy to share this with us and others.

Sometimes, it's hard to think about how many human Sometimes, it's hard to think about how many humans there are on this planet. It's easy to get caught up in what's going on in your own life, or in the lives of people you knowโ€”but it's important to remember that we're all in this together.

As a species, we face food shortages and global warming, as well as state insecurity and pandemics. And while having a large number of children may have been fashionable once upon a time, nowadays it's not considered something most people would want to do.

That's why it's so important that we work together to curb the population growth by equipping ourselves with information that helps us make better choices about how many children we have and how well we can care for them.

The practice is FGM has different cultural connotations depending on which culture the girl is from. Regardless of the #culture or #religion, science tops them all, it is medically unacceptable to mutilate or circumcise a female genitalia because it has no health benefit rather, the implications are long term for a female child or woman.

Onelife Initiative has been working tirelessly to make sure FGM is a thing if the past just like killing of twins and other harmful cultural practices. We won't rest until we see our desired result.

Why am I learning this? Every time you are learnin Why am I learning this? Every time you are learning something in school, ask yourselves why you are learning it. We were all young once, and we all questioned the usefulness of our school lessons. If you think what you learnt/are learning in school is not useful, think again.

Here, we had 14 of our team members averaging about 5 years post tertiary education under their belts brainstorming and trying to decide on what research methods to employ for our State of Girl Education Project report. With monitoring, evaluation and learning sitting at the heart of what we do, it was a major activity for us. We are proud of what we were able to come up with during the 4 day session.

Do you know that you can see your menstrual cycle Do you know that you can see your menstrual cycle twice in a month? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Young girls and sometimes women get confused when their period happens twice in a month. This can happen where a girl or woman has a short cycle and also bleeds for two or three days in a period cycle. Normal menstrual cycle can range from 21 - 35 days. Some cycles may be longer and others shorter which means it is possible to have your period twice in a month, that is in the beginning and at the end of the month. It is nothing to be concerned about. Just stay clean and rest during this period.๐Ÿง–โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ›€

Our work includes improving SRHR knowledge and information among adolescents and young girls and this is a question that comes up among different groups that we work with. It is important for girls to have the right information about their reproductive health.
