Akwa Ibom Governorship Election and the Promise of 400,000 Votes
Akwa Ibom is called the Land of Promise for many reasons. Ask residents and indigenes if you doubt this. Elections are a major issue in Akwa Ibom. The average young person understands and knows when the season is near. From the fez caps to the T-shirts, the evidence abounds as to how politically awake most people are.
In this 2023 Election Brief for Akwa Ibom State, we show how from 1999, only a single party has managed the affairs of the state at the governorship level. Are there patterns to this? In the 4,354 Polling Units in the state what is going to be the pattern again for this Saturday’s election? What can we learn again from the numbers? We have had governorship aspirants in the state who had in excess of one million votes. We have also had a first runner up who had only 19,000 votes in Akwa Ibom. That was the closest anyone got the man who eventually became governor. Shocking, right? Does it explain why the primaries ticket for the ruling party seems like the real election rehearsal.
We also captured 4 main gladiators who are primed for the election of March 18th. Who are they and what are they promising? The report tells us. Our prediction of what 400,000 votes can do in this election is also captured in this report. It’s our first for an election in Akwa Ibom state. As a non-partisan organisation, we dearly wish all contestants, especially the 2 female candidates the best in the election. Did we also tell you that for all the 4 major contestants, it is their first attempt at being a Governor. If you are reading this and you are in Akwa Ibom state, please go out a vote. It never matters if your candidate win or not. For every time you do so, you are strengthening democracy.
