Hearing that your girlfriend is pregnant can be shocking and could knock you off your feet especially if you’re young, still in school and not ready for anything like that. The first thing you should do is to confirm if your girlfriend is really pregnant by ensuring she takes a test and not simply because she is vomiting! You might be surprised at the test but if it still comes out positive, it is important for you to sit and have a long chat with your girlfriend. Running off, shunning her completely or denying the child are possible ideas that might come into your mind but it is good to take responsibilities for your actions and be present in her decision-making process. It is normal for you to feel angry, guilty, resentful or afraid of the outcome of the situation. The decision about the pregnancy is not completely yours, your girlfriend also has a stake and you need to consider her. My girlfriend is pregnant and I’m not ready

It is thrilling and can be terrifying when she tells you “I missed my period.” You might even have a panic attack especially if you weren’t expecting it and it’s all normal. Talking to a non-judgmental adult or close friend with a good knowledge of possible options will help at this point or better still, speak to a counsellor in order to address the issue. Whatever your decision, don’t put your blame on her or pressure her unnecessarily, It’s not all about you. This is a hard situation, she can tell what you have on your mind because she knows you but communication will go a long way. Use this time to think about the situation and explore all the options on the table. It’s possible to have her give birth to the child and continue to lead a normal life.

Whatever you do, ensure that your life and that of your girlfriends’ is not endangered. Moreover, this situation should not repeat itself, abstinence is the best option but if you cannot abstain, picking up a pregnancy prevention option should be your next line of action.
